Abstract
Abstract The design of drag type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is focused on efficiency improvement by lowering blade resisting drag force during headwind. The wind turbine consists of three blades with flapping fins mechanism. The fins will move to "open" position during headwind and will move to "close" position during tailwind. Wind tunnel testing was done to the turbine with several variations of fins number, turbine's radius and blade's area. The results showed that the start-up speed was 3.1 m/s. At the wind speed between 3.1 m/s and 7.8m/s, the turbine's kinetic energy and power coefficient were 0.008-2.93 W and 2.17-23.54% respectively. The turbine is more efficient, simple manufacturing and cheaper compared to other of its kind. The technology is transferrable to middle and low income societies that have not enjoyed electricity, thus application of the turbine in the societies can help the government program in supplying electricity and improving welfare of the people.
