Abstract

This research studies the ability of a black carbon from rugs (coco fiber) to decrease the concentration of peroxide value (PV), and to purify the color of reused oil. The treatment with carbon black is expected to improve the quality of reused oil in order to extend the using time of the oil. Cleaned agriculture waste (coco fiber) was grinded to make powder. The powder was conducted by aktivation process using phosphate acid (H3PO4) 1 M for 24 hours. Then the powder was furnace on 170oC for 1 hour, after that temperature was increase to 500oC for 1 hour. Carbon was washed by aquadest until neutral. After neutralization, then it was dried to obtain Carbon Black. The variable of the adsorption process is mass black carbon as a adsorbent for ; 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 gram. The used oil 200 ml was heated on 100oC. Then it was mixed together with carbon black at mixing speed 1000 rpm for 1 hour and after that it was filtrated vacuumly. The treated oil was analyzed to determine the concentration of PV and the color. Our results show that carbon black from coco fiber can be used reduce the concentration of PV, and the darkness color of reused cooking oil. Using carbon black 10 gram is able to decrease the concentration of PV, 10.88 meq H2O2/ kg oil, and using carbon black 12 gram, the color absorbance decreases 0,833 Abs.
