Abstract

The negative impacts of the development of the palm oil industrial is increasing palm oil mill wastewater which contained high ranging total suspended solid (TSS) between 1330-50700 mg/L. Previously researchers has use much methods to reduce levels of TSS, but so far can not be implemented effectively. The purpose of this study was to assess and determine the level of impairment solid content of palm oil mill wastewater in anaerobic hybrid bioreactor with palm shell a growth media. Anaerobic hybrid bioreactor is a combination between the suspended growth system and attached growth system which use palm shells as a medium for cell immobilization. This research method involves bioreactor start-ups, operational processes and analysis which covered solids content of TS, TVS, TSS and VSS. Process variables which measured were feed flow rate 2.3 L/day, 2.8 L/day, 3.8 L/day, 5.7 L/day and 11.34 L/day. The results of this study indicated that the feed flow rate of 2.3, 2.8, 3.8, 5.7 and 11.34 L/day allowance TSS efficiency of 74.57%, 82.78%, 71.67%; 67.72% and 64.2%. The maximum efficiency is 82.78% allowance for TSS was obtained at a feed flow rate of 2.8 L / day. These results indicate that anaerobic hybrid bioreactor system with palm shell as the media is good enough to put aside the matter content in palm oil mill wastewater.
