    Abstract

    As consequence of the hypercompetitive situation, company is required to produce new sustainable products quickly. Leather products as one of the nine items of superior products at DI Jogjakarta contribute significantly to the growth of local revenues and local employment. Effort to strengthen the local economy by empowering a superior product should always be done, one of which is the need for research to identify the extent to which the capabilities of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) in new product development process, because the business continuity can be achieved with the ability to constantly innovate products. Contextual factors such as the involvement of consumer organizations (consumer's influence), focus on quality (quality orientation), the novelty of the product (product inovativeness) and time pressure assumed to be an effect on the quality of new products. Sample was 40 SMEs in DI Jogjakarta, especially in hand made industries in several handicraft industries centers in Kasongan, Manding, Tambi, and Brajan. Multiple regression analysis used to analyze the data. Results showed that the consumer's influence and quality orientation have positive correlation on the quality of new products. Product innovativeness and time pressure had no negative effect on quality of new products, the influences were positive, contradicts to the theory that higher levels of product newness and the pressure of time in new product development will negatively affect the quality of new products.
