Abstract

Patchouli oil is the most stable non-oil commodity export of Indonesia. Almost 50% of volatile oil exports, is dominated by patchouli oil. Patchouli oil is not only used as fragrance materials, but it has been developed as medicinal products. This is because patchouli oils contain more than 24 kinds of sesquiterpenes, which have potential as anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-microbial and anti-tumor compounds. One component of patchouli oil that is very potential and has a very high value is patchouli alcohol. Therefore, it is necessary to separate the patchouli alcohol by combining the extraction and distillation in a one column by using fried oil as solvent. The process is known as extractive distillation. Fried oil is a solvent that can bind impurities to and alter the relative volatility of the components in its original condition. The study was began by designed and fabricated the vacuum extractive distillation. A preliminary study was conducted in order to determine the suitable process pressure that is relatively good in the patchouli oil-patchouli alcohol refining process.The pressure was varied with temperature, where the pressure were varied of 3, 4 and 5 mmHg and temperature of 110, 120,130,140, and 150 oC. While the distillation time variation were two, four, six and eight hours. It is expected that from those variables we can get a maximum yield of patchouli alcohol. The addition of n-hexane as a solvent can also enhance the patchouli alcohol levels produced. Keywords: patchouli oil, extractive distillation, patchouli alcohol
