    Abstract

    Biodiesel is an alternative substitution of diesel fuel. It is made from vegetable oil or animal fats that contain trygliceride. Palm oil is one of vegetable oil that can be used as raw material for biodiesel (methyl ester). Waste palm oil is used in this research, because it has potential as raw material for biodiesel production. If it is consumed by human, it could cause some diseases like cancer and the narrowing blood vessel. Besides that it will make environmental damage due to its high value of COD and BOD if it is disposed away to environment. This research is aimed to make biodiesel from waste vegetable oil. Some analysis were conducted to learn the influence of ratio waste vegetable oil to alcohol volume and catalyst concentration used to biodiesel yield, the qualities of biodiesel in this research would be analysed too. Biodiesel making process started with raw material preparation, making the Na-metoksida catalyst, transesterification of vegetable oil to biodiesel, separation of methyl ester and glycerol, and washing the methyl ester. In this research, trans-esterification was carried out during 60 minutes at 550C, with variation of methanol concentration 15 %-volume, 20 %-volume and 25 %-volume with catalyst Na-metoxide concentration 0.1 %-weight and 0.2 %-weight. The optimum condition for this research had reached when the process was carried out with methanol concentration 20 %-volume and catalyst concentration 0.2 %-weight. This condition revealed that biodiesel yield was 79 % respectively. Keywords: biodiesel, esterification, trans-esterification, waste palm oil
