    Abstract

    Indonesia as a tropical country has a potential for a large timber industry so that the sawdust waste generated is large. One of alternative sawdust utilization is converting sawdust become useful compound by pyrolysis process. Pyrolysis process is thermal decomposition organic material at inert situation ( without or with a few oxygens) which will cause the forming of volatile compound. The aim of this research was to study catalyst influence upon pyrolysis products such as char, liquid and gas. The experiment was conducted in fixed bed reactor equipped with condenser and catalyst tube. Pyrolysis was run till temperature reach 700°C. Catalyst was placed in reactor with variation of catalyst mass ( 50 grams, 100 grams, 150 grams and 200 grams) or in catalyst tube with variation of catalyst mass (¼ part of catalyst tube 423,82 grams, ½ part of catalyst tube 646,60 grams, ¾ part of catalyst tube 904,25 grams and 1 part of catalyst tube 1143,67 grams). Liquid pyrolysis product was analyzed with GC-MS method. The results showed that the volume liquid pyrolysis product with catalyst placed in reactor was more compared to volume liquid pyrolysis product without catalyst and volume liquid pyrolysis product with catalyst place in catalyst tube. It was showed from GC-MS analysis that acetic acid and phenol were the most compound found in liquid pyrolysis product. Keywords: sawdust, pyrolysis, zeolite catalyst
