    Abstract

    Coconut fiber can be one of the potential alternative energy resources by converting it into oil by thermochemical liquefaction in the hot compressed water. This research was intended to find a temperature and a pressure which produce a maximum yield of oil, and the contained substances in the oil. A 100 ml cylindrical autoclave used in the experiment was loaded with 5 g dry powdered coconut fiber, 2 g catalyst (sodium carbonate) and 70 ml water. After having blown with Nitrogen, the autoclave was heated in the tube furnace until the desired temperature, and then kept at this temperature for 10 min. The liquid and the solid product removed from the autoclave were separated by filtration. The liquid product was extracted with nhexane and the extract was distillated to obtain oil. The results showed that the maximum oil produced yield was 35.2% at 280oC, 6.42 MPa. The main compound contained in the oil product were furanone, ethanoic acid, 1,2-ethanediol and phenol. For utilizing oil as a fuel, the oil needs to be examined furthermore. Keywords: thermochemical liquefaction, hot compressed water, coconut fiber
