    Abstract

Bioethanol can be produced from materials that contain reducing sugars. Nowadays biomass is the raw material that is being extensively studied for producing the sugar. Coconut fiber is one kind of biomass that is quite abundantly available in Indonesia and not widely utilized so far. This study was aimed to obtain the optimum condition for enzymatic hydrolysis of coconut fiber into reducing sugar by Trichoderma reesei mold and its kinetics model. This experiment was initially conducted through a sequence of coconut fiber pretreatments that comprised cutting off, delignification in NaOH solution, addition-by-nutrients, and sterilization. Inoculum was prepared by growing mold in Czapek medium. Fermentation process was performed in Erlenmeyer flasks on a shaker at room temperature by varying fiber concentration (5, 10, and 15 g/ml), inoculum concentration (3, 4, 5, and 6 g/ml), and initial pH (4, 4,5, 5, and 5,5). Based on the amount of reducing sugar yielded, the optimum process condition could be determined. Kinetics model under these specified conditions therefore was postulated. This study concluded that coconut fiber could be hydrolyzed into reducing sugar through enzymatic hydrolysis by Trichoderma reesei. The optimum condition was obtained at fiber concentration of 5 g/ml, inoculum concentration of 5 g/ml, and initial pH of 5, with reducing sugar concentration of 0,8 g/ml. The kinetics model fitted to an empirical expression: Pt/S0 = 1-exp[-0,000721(t)0,9845]. Pt, S0, and t denote the sugar concentration at any time t (g/ml), initial substrate concentration (g/ml), and fermentation time (hours), respectively. Key words: Coconut fiber, enzymatic hydrolysis, reducing sugar, Trichoderma reesei
