    Abstract

    Biodiesel production from vegetable oil will produce glycerol as by-product about 12% of the biodiesel production. The amount of glycerol that was produced needed alternative way to handling immediately so as to not become the waste that polluted the environment. One of the solution was to process glycerol to polyglycidyl nitrate (PGN). Basic knowledge of engineering is able to analyze and exploit fundamental reactions in production of polyglycidyl nitrate so as the polyglycidyl nitrate industry was very potential to be constructed and operation in Indonesia. The design of polyglycidyl nitrate industry needs technical information about the reaction of glycerol to polyglycidyl nitrate. The polyglycidyl nitrate production could be carried out in a three neck round bottom flask equipped with a motor stirrer, thermometer, addition funnel and nitrogen purge. The flask is charged with glycerol and nitric acid 5% - 90% with the molar ratio of nitric acid and glycerol is in a range of 4:1 to 5:1. The reaction tipically requires at least about 4-6 hours with the reaction temperature is 0 oC to 25 oC. The nitration reaction is conducted in the presence of heat sink medium such as methylene chloride, chloroform and or dichloroethane. Further to neutralize nitric acid and cyclization of dinitroglycerin, added to a solution of sodium hydroxide. The reaction continued at temperatures at below 25 oC. The polymerization reaction is a cationic polymerization process conducted using a polyol initiator, Lewis acid catalysts and organic solvents such as methylene chloride, chloroform or dichloroethane. At the beginning, initiator-catalyst complex lasts for the presence of solvent or water. Glycidyl nitrate was added dropwise during reaction. To design of polyglycidyl nitrate industry it is needed immediately a research program to study the mechanism of the reaction of glycerol to polyglycidyl nitrate to determine the optimum condition for production polyglycidyl nitrate from glycerol. Correlation between process condition and kinetics of reactions can be generated from the result of the laboratory experiment. This information is used to calculate design constant that is need to produce polyglycidyl nitrate. At this time the research of polyglycidyl nitrate is being carried out in Gadjah Mada University.
