    Abstract

    Wind is an alternative source of energy which is environmental friendly. Wind energy conversion into electricity involves two stages. First, wind turbine converts wind energy into kinetic energy in form of rotational energy. Rotational movement of the turbine is then utilized to spin a power generator which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. There are two categories of wind turbine which are horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) and vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). VAWT has several advantages compared to HAWT besides its main drawback of low efficiency. This novel design of vertical axis wind turbine is focused on the efficiency improvement by lowering the ratio of the resisting to the thrusting wind collector area and decreasing the minimum wind speed required to rotate the turbine. The novel turbine consists of three finned blades that in upwind position the fins will open thus decreasing the drag and in downwind position it will close and exposing largest area to capture wind energy. Equations for rotor speed and rotor spinning energy were obtained with mathematical modeling by using undimensioned array method. Variables in the equations can be obtained by comparing calculated to experimental data. This novel design improves efficiency and decreases wind start-up speed, therefore it is suitable to be implemented at various locations with fluctuating wind speed and direction.
