    Abstract

    Contemporary industrial development and rapid pace of transportation sector demand an environmentally sustainable energy sources. Compared to fossil fuels, bioethanol has more environmentally and economic strategic benefit as well as a safer and cleaner liquid fuel. Bioethanol production has been intensively investigated though hydrolysis and fermentation of biomass. However, there are still technical and economic challenges, especially the dehydration of ethanol to produce the fuel grade bioethanol. In this research, optimum operating conditions are determined for the extractive distillation column using a mixture of ethylene glycol and glycerol, which is simulated using ChemCad Simulation Software. Pure glycerol as an alternative solvent, which is the side product of biodiesel production, is also evaluated. As a mass separating agent, ethylene glycol and glycerol can extract water from the azeotropic mixture of ethanol-water, which is conducted using the extractive column. Therefore, the distillate of the extractive column is the fuel grade bioethanol (>99.5% and its bottom product is the mixture of ethylene glycol-glycerol-water .The solvent is then recovered in the recovery column.
