    Abstract

    Sustainable and more environmentally friendly energy resources are necessary for the industry and transportation development. Bio-ethanol has several advantages compared to the fossil fuel. For the production of fuel grade bio-ethanol, its characteristic is mainly determined by the dehydration process. Azeotropic distillation can be employed to separate azeotrop mixture of ethanol-water by adding extraneous mass-separating agent called entrainer. In this research, the selection of operating condition of distillation column for ethanol dehydration process with isooctane is simulated using ChemCad Simulation Software. Reboiler duty and reflux ratio are varied to obtain fuel grade bio-ethanol. Based on the steady state simulation results, output multiplicity is revealed in this azeotropic distillation process. It is found that the alternation of feed condition can trigger steady state transition. In addition, the optimum operating condition should be optimized to obtain the fuel grade bioethanol.
