                            Abstract

                            rYintt is un atternotive source "t:::;frf[r is environmentat friendty. rlind energy conversion into electricity involves tu)o stages. First, wind turbine converts wind energlt into kinetic energy in form of rotational energy. Rotational movement of the turbine is then utilized to spin a power generator which converts kinetic energ) into electrical energy. There are two categories of wincl turbine which are horizontal oxis wind turbine (HAlltT) and vertical axis wind tarbine (VAllT). VAWT has severul odvantages compared to HAI{T besides its moin rlrawbock of low efJiciency. This novel design of vertical axis wind turbine is focused on the efticiency improvement by lowering the ratio of the resisting to the thrusting wind collector area and decreasingth e minimam wind speedr equiredt o rotatet he turbine. The novel turbine consists of three Jinned blarles that in upwind position the Jins will open thus decreasing the drag and in downwind position it will close and exposing largest area to captare wind energy. Equntions for rotor speed and rotor spinning energy were obtained with msthematicolm odeling by using undimensionedn rray method. Varioblesi n the equationsc an be obtained by comparing calculated to experimental data. This novel design improves efJiciency and decreasesw ind start-up speed,t herefore it is suitable to be implementeda t various locations withfluctuating wind speed and direction.
