Abstract
ABSTRACT
PT Karya Total is a company that is engaged in the production of organic
fertilizer. Since the process is run manually, increasing production capacity faces an
obstacle which, as a result, brings about unattainable entire targeted production quota.
Hence, a problem arises in that the company fails to meet customers’ ever increasing
demands. To solve this problem, replacement of human labor by machines is to be
introduced.
This study is aimed to discover the feasibility aspect of the use of machines to
substitute for the human labor in charge of the mixing work station. The purpose of this
study was to analyze the economic aspects. Before the machines are brought into
operation, a certain level of likely increase in the production capacity is determined.
Besides, balance of cost and profit before and after the replacement is calculated. A cash
flow approach is used to analyze feasibility. Performance evaluation before and after the
replacement is conducted by way of balancing the economic cost before and after the
replacement such as that which includes production cost per unit and profit per product
unit.
The research findings have shown that after the replacement, the amount of cash
obtained is greater than that when the production process is run manually, and the
production cost per product unit decreases. Given the result of the study as such, it can
be concluded that the replacement of human labor by machines is said to be feasible.
Key words: fertilizer, substitution, human labor, machine resources, cash flow.
